Truth and lies in politics and elections… the need for independent checking.

June 7th, 2010 · No Comments · Posts

There’s a tantalising sniff of an election in the air… but continued bad polls for Mr. Rudd could see it later rather than sooner.  All sorts of claims will be foisted on us, from the gospel truth to the most unadulterated falsehoods, leavened with various shades of half-truths, distortions, exaggerations, hyperbole,  irrelevancies, and topped of with dollops of disingenuousness.  We badly need a variety of independent, third-party commentary on the truth or otherwise of election season claims.  Could some bright young Australians please consider setting up a site along the lines of PolitiFact, the American outfit that rates the truth of politician’s statements and provides some tolerably unbiased analysis to support their rating? They won a Pulitzer last year for this work.  They also rate their leaders on promises made … here’s the score for President Obama:

I wonder what the Rudd-o-meter and Abbott-o-meter would be registering at the moment?
